The first contract-based academic department in Ulsan!
Department of Semiconductor Engineering at UNIST

The semiconductor field is not only a critical technology in our country but also a leading industry for future technologies such as AI, autonomous driving, and robotics. It is thus crucial to foster excellent talents for this field. UNIST has signed an MOU with Samsung Electronics to foster technical experts in semiconductor processes, and decided to establish the new “Department of Semiconductor Engineering (contract-based department).” Let's explore the newly established Department of Semiconductor Engineering.

Q1Introduction to the Department of Semiconductor Engineering

The Department of Semiconductor Engineering at UNIST was established through a combination of the government’s semiconductor industry promotion policy, support from Samsung Electronics, and UNIST’s capabilities — with the best faculty and research infrastructure. It is the only contract department in the field of semiconductor materials, devices, and processes that nurtures key talents in this field. Professor Yoon Tae-sik, the head of the Department of Semiconductor Engineering (also serving as the Dean of the Graduate School of Semiconductor Materials and Devices Engineering), along with 14 full-time professors and 25 adjunct professors, who are among the best in Korea in the fields of semiconductor materials, analysis, devices, processes, and modeling, plans to focus on fostering semiconductor experts.
The Department of Semiconductor Engineering is operated as an employment-linked department under a contract with Samsung Electronicss. Therefore, successful completion of all courses guarantees employment at Samsung Electronics (at Device Solution Division) (※ Completion of all courses, including Samsung Scholarship, required).

Q2What are the advantages of the education at the Department of Semiconductor Engineering?

With the goal of cultivating experts through specialized education in the semiconductor field, the freshmen will start in the Department of Semiconductor Engineering upon admission, instead of the School of New Unisters (with the option for double major or minor in other departments). The program is conducted as an integrated bachelor's and master's course, consisting of 3.5 years for the bachelor's degree and 1.5 years for the master's degree. The total duration of the program is 5 years, and upon completion, students receive a master's degree (In case of withdrawal, a bachelor's degree is awarded if the bachelor's graduation requirements are met).
The Department of Semiconductor Engineering operates shared laboratories for education, a nano-fab, and a material analysis cleanroom to provide students with opportunities to build exceptional knowledge through these research facilities. Collaborating with a total of 7 participating departments, including the Graduate School of Semiconductor Materials and Devices Engineering, the parent department, it conducts interdisciplinary educational programs to foster experts in the semiconductor field.
The curriculum includes 17 major courses and 2 liberal arts courses, in addition to existing courses, to establish unique expertise of the Department of Semiconductor Engineering.

**Newly established courses at the Department of Semiconductor Engineering: Semiconductor materials, Basic experiments in semiconductors 1 & 2, Semiconductor wiring technology, Samsung electronics internship practice, Basic research in semiconductors, Basic circuit theory, Device simulation, Integration process simulation, Semiconductor industry seminars, etc.

Q3How are the students selected?

The quota for the Department of Semiconductor Engineering is 40. Among them, 35 will be admitted through the regular rolling admissions process and 5 will be selected through regular admissions process based on their national college entrance exam scores.

  • Regular admissions (Rolling admissions) for the academic year of 2024
: Applicants need to specifically select “Department of Semiconductor Engineering” during their application process. It is possible to apply to both unspecified and Semiconductor Engineering majors. When accepted to both, the applicant must choose one for enrollment.
※ You may not apply to the Department of Semiconductor Engineering alone.
  • Regular admissions based on the national college entrance exam scores for the academic year of 2024
: Separate from the process for unspecified major (Must select “Semiconductor Engineering”)
Q4What benefits will be provided when you enter the Department of Semiconductor Engineering?
  • Bachelor’s: Support scholarship of 6 million KRW per year
  • Master’s: Support scholarship (stipend) of 2.4 million KRW per year and research encouragement grant of 5.6 million KRW or more per year
  • Tuition and dormitory cost: Full support (up to 10 semesters)
