Assistant Manager Gisoo Kim who supervises machinery maintenance at Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Co. Ltd. visited the UNIST AI Innovation Park this spring. He registered for the third “AI Novatus Academia” program to learn the AI technology required to launch an in-house startup company called “Deep AI.” He tried to find a method to combine AI with eddy current testing (ECT), which finds internal defects in deteriorated industrial plants through theory and practice for five months. We met with Deep AI CEO Gisoo Kim who said he benefited by not only solving existing problems but also having better directions through this program.
AI is combined with ECT

The causes of accidents that occurs at industrial sites can be largely divided into the facility, system, and human factors. Facility and system factors can be prevented with investment, training, and safety management system and process. Keen attention has been paid to AI to improve facility and system factors. Deep AI tries to combine AI technology with an eddy current inspection test (ECT), which serves as a health examination of industrial plants. It aims to provide the ECT smart solution, in which AI robots collect, accumulate, and assess the information amassed in the AI-based automatic evaluation system.
Deep AI CEO Gisoo Kim felt that ECT being used onsite is not great in terms of accuracy and efficiency. In particular, he is concerned that it consumes a lot of time and money due to the manual inspection method, and increases the risk of accidents. Then, he came up with an idea that is AI when he was concerned about how to solve this problem. .
“Existing inspection method inserts and withdraws inspection equipment that is close to the aging plant, and then collected information is recorded. By doing this, daily evaluations are limited because of human labor jobs and exposure to many risks due to the nearby inspection of dangerous facilities. I had a chance to study AI through online open lectures because I was interested in AI, and I found that the obstacles I face would be solved with better results if I apply AI to our sites.”
Then, I thought I should prepare AI in earnest and jump at the chance whenever I can find AI-related information. The “Baeulang School” program hosted by the Ulsan ICT Promotion Agency was the one I found at that time.
“The lecture venue of the program was UNIST. I went to UNIST for a seperate training, but I found there was an “AI Novatus Academia” program at UNIST.”

Practical technology-centered education applicable to the worksite

The best advantage of the AI Novatus Academia program, which was chosen by Kim was that the professors who majored in AI were the lecturers. It was really attractive to him because the lectures were given by the experts who know the latest information and trends such as how far AI technology has come at a global level and how it is being used at industrial sites better than anyone else.
“In contrast with other lectures that begin with a curriculum that focuses on the fundamentals, AI Novatus Academia lectures are concentrated on how to use AI technology practically for real industrial environments, targeting current employees in the industry. Thus, if you already have a good grasp of the basic concepts, you can get really useful information a lot.” Otherwise, to an ordinary layman, he/she may feel that lectures are overwhelming.
Another advantage of this program is to help you to form an eye to perceive and broader insights to make better decisisons. That is, it can give you the power to discern which task can or can’t be achieved with AI. AI cannot be a solution for every problem in every field. However, it is critically important to know which AI technology is combined at our sites among many AI technologies.
“Originally, I enrolled in this academic program to get some help for the development of ECT evaluation technology, but now I understand computer vision, one of the deep learning technologies, which is more beneficial to me. Computer vision is a technology to recognize and collect objects, and lecturers have said it has advanced a lot with high accuracy. The idea of the AI robot that is currently under development and production have came from computer vision. I had not only the solution of existing problems but also the direction for a better solution.”
As mentioned above, AI Novatus Academia lectures are held in such a way that practical work is brought as the subject of the lecture, and the professors of the majors are connected to each other and solve problems together. By doing this, learning can be directly applied to industrial sites and the effectiveness of lectures can also be improved.
“It is like a process where I learn practical tasks in the company. As I learn how to solve a problem while working with seniors and colleagues, AI Novatus Academia professors give me methodological advice rather than the solution itself, so that I can solve it directly myself at the worksite. Because of this kind of learning style, I can apply my knowledge practically to sites and formulate a better way to solve it.”

AI Novatus Academia

AI Novatus Academia is a training program for current employees in industries in the southeastern region of Korea hosted by the UNIST AI Innovation Park. The curriculum was designed so that engineers in industrial production sites learn AI theories for five months including hands-on practices, and plan AI projects required for their industry to solve their problems.
