Established in 1901, the Nobel Prize is awarded annually on December 10 (the day of Alfred Nobel's death) to an individual or organization that has conferred the greatest benefit to humankind. This year's 2024 Nobel Prize went to two physicists who have made groundbreaking contributions to the development of artificial intelligence (AI): Professor John Hopfield of Princeton University in the United States, and Professor Geoffrey Hinton of the University of Toronto in Canada. The Nobel Committee determined that the deep learning and neural network technologies they developed are firmly based on the principles of physics though neither of them are conventional physicists.
However, with the announcement of the winners, there were also warnings about the future of AI technology. The Nobel Committee emphasized that “we need to think about how to use AI technology safely and ethically.” Professors Hopfield and Hinton also reiterated the need to explore ways to use AI ethically and strengthen control research.
Therefore, it appears that the ultimate “solution” is still up to you now that AI technology has entered an era where it can deliver “faster and more accurate” answers.
