Strong cooperation between universities and industries is a very important issue. As our society advances based on high technology, the importance of this cooperation will grow even further. The efforts of UNIST, which has been actively pursuing the establishment of an industry-academia cooperation center since 2019, finally bore fruit in October 2023.
The Office of University Industry Relations at UNIST is a facility with a total floor area of 8,700 ㎡, spanning one basement floor and seven above-ground floors, in a site area of over 5,200 ㎡. A total of 20.6 billion KRW was invested in the project. Designed not only to nurture the entrepreneurship of UNIST faculty and students, but also to systematically support technological innovation and facilitate exchanges, the center features a variety of spaces — including areas for startup companies; dedicated research and education spaces for tenant companies; co-working spaces; an events hall; and a versatile exhibition area.
The newly established Office of University-Industry Relations at UNIST is expected to serve as a focal point contributing to the advancement of the Korean New Deal, and the innovative startup ecosystem in the era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
UNIST Dormitories have undergone a transformation into more convenient and comfortable spaces through the 2nd phase of the environment improvement project, following the 1st phase of the environment improvement project of 2021 (in buildings 301 to 303), focused on buildings 304 to 305, which were completed in 2011.
With a total project cost of 1.3 billion KRW, the existing double rooms were completely remodeled into single rooms, and furniture to fit single rooms was installed. LED lighting and wallpapers were replaced to create a bright and cheerful atmosphere. The renovation also took students’ requests into account, incorporating features such as bedhead shelves on which to place mobile phones, etc. before and after sleep, spacious desks to enhance concentration, and full-length mirrors.
Thanks to these efforts, the second phase dormitories, which were originally not popular among students, became highly sought after. The occupancy rate, which was 70% in the second semester of 2022 before the renovations, increased to 97% in the second semester of 2023 after the renovations. The satisfaction rate of students residing in the dormitories was as high as 95.9%.
UNIST Dormitories not only focus on the improvement of facilities and the environment, but also on the enhancement of overall satisfaction with their daily lives. To make the dormitories not just a space for living but also a space for cultural lives, dormitory residents have been offered cultural lectures since November 2022. Various types of special lectures that are not easy to be approached in everyday life — such as “Exploring My Wine Taste Through Five Senses,” “Making My Own Perfume,” “Oil Pastel Paintings,” etc. — were given for students who want to quench their thirst to experience cultural life.
In addition, starting from the first semester of this year, the dormitory introduced a residential assistant system. To immediately respond to student grievances that can happen after administrative work hours, the Student Residence Team is available. Selected residential assistants ensure students can enjoy a safe and convenient life through night patrols, nighttime administrative grievances-caring services, group chat rooms by students’ learned year, assisting with dormitory check-in and -out, and assisting with other various living support team tasks.
