Towards the development of UNIST
UNIST development foundation & recent donations

Mimi Interview 1 Donated one million won of Development Fund for diverse independent activities that will raise the sense of fellowship and membership among students in the era of COVID-19 President of Student Association, Kim Tae-Yun, Industrial Engineering
Q. Can you please introduce yourself briefly?
A. Hello, my name is Kim Tae-Yun. I’m a student who entered the Department of Industrial Engineering in 2016. I was elected as the president of Student Association during the general election. I have been working hard for the welfare and convenience of undergraduate students. I have acquired an accounting license as I had much interest in finance and banking. I will continue my studies in that direction.
Q. Is there any reason that motivated you to donate?
A. At first, I was motivated to donate when I thought that the budget for students’ independent activities was less than those in other specialized colleges of science and technology. I decided to donate so that I would be of some help. Students’ independent activities and cultural events play an important role in forming a sense of fellowship and membership among students. I regretted the relatively small budget in view of its importance and wrote the donation agreement. Especially, I believe that a new measure should be prepared to connect students because the classroom lessons and group activities have been reduced to a large extent due to COVID-19.
Q. You have asked that the donation would be used to support the student activities in school. Do you have any specific idea as to how the donation would be used?
A. I wish that the Development Fund would be added to the budget for students’ self-administration and used for various cultural projects for fellow students. Even under the untact situation, it will be possible to plan and execute new types of cultural events. Also, through the support for culture or autonomous activities, I hope the fund would be used for independent organizations like the student association in colleges in order for students out of school to retain a sense of fellowship.
Q. There must be many who cannot feel the importance and necessity of donation. Why is it important to donate to UNIST?
A. In fact, our heart cannot be easily followed by action because donations do not necessarily bring any benefit in return. Regarding the preparation of the Development Fund, I think that many members of UNIST will gradually take action on their goodwill for the school with donations if we promote diverse donation cases actively. In fact, the donations for the school should be made in the spirit of caring for our junior students and helping them to receive the education under a better environment. Especially, the Development Fund created through donation will have guaranteed independence compared to the funds that the school receives from the government and other organizations. It is more important because the school can use the fund independently for diverse areas of students’ welfare.
Q. Everyone wants to accomplish his plan or dream after graduation. What would you say about your impression of UNIST and what kind of role UNIST should play for juniors and the society?
A. When I took my first step in UNIST, it was very uneasy and hard. One reason was that I had studied liberal arts in high school and moreover it was hard to adapt myself because I had come to Ulsan for the first time. But as I retrospect the past, I realize that UNIST also went through the same experience. The construction of the school was not completed yet even after many years passed since the foundation in the land of Eonyang. Such situation of the school was similar to my experience. While I have accomplished my plan or dream after graduation, UNIST also has grown together pursuing its vision and dream. It was good because the students were guaranteed the independence to choose paths that were not always conventional although the school has a short history. I hope that UNIST would remain as a school that can maintain the pioneering spirit as if nothing is predetermined rather than following the formalities of tradition. I hope that befitting the school slogan ‘First in Change’, juniors also can take on new challenges and pursue opportunities and accomplish their goals, in directions that seniors have never attempted.
Q. As the president of the Undergraduate Student Association in UNIST, what would you like say to alumni who will read this book?
A. Not as the president, but rather as an undergraduate student Kim Tae-Yun, this is what I cordially wish to say to juniors and seniors of the alumni. As much as I went through much hardship while I studied in UNIST, I treasure every happy and good memory of the days at UNIST. Perhaps, other alumni also feel the same way as I do. Some students were annoyed in their early freshmen period because the recognition of the school was low. Now, many people have come to be proud of the school thanks to the foundations the alumni have laid. I believe UNIST has grown to the present reputed school thanks to excellent alumni. I cordially ask alumni who have been working in many different areas to maintain contact with junior students who are walking behind. Especially, I ask all to pay attention to students of diverse independent groups who have been leading the students’ society. Hoping that you will achieve great success in all your endeavors!
Mimi Interview 2 Alumna Moon Seon-Young who donated 1 million to the UNIST Development Fund for current students in the Graduate School of Interdisciplinary Management
Q. Can you introduce yourself?
A. My name is Moon Seon-Yung. I joined the Graduate School of Interdisplinary Management in UNIST in 2019. In 2009, I passed the examination for a certified public accountant and worked as an accountant in Hanyoung Accounting and Shinwoo Accounting. Currently, I am running my own accounting office in Ulsan City.
Q. What motivated you to make a donation to the UNIST Development Fund?
A. It was a really new and wonderful experience when I was in the second year at the Graduate School of Interdisplinary Management in UNIST. First of all, I could meet good peer students and learn. New study was a fresh stimulation. Also, I used to live in Seoul but I came down to enter the graduate school in Ulsan at a time when I felt constrained. I went over that difficult time well. The school offered scholarship during my attendance, so that I was thankfully able to relieve the burden and study well. I wanted to reciprocate for the help I received from the school through assisting junior students again after my graduation.
Q. Would you have anything to say to alumni and current students?
A. I would like to say thanks for all your great efforts. I hope you will do your best to step forward gradually in your position and accomplish your dreams. Unless we give up our effort, no conclusion is made.
Q. What would you say to alumni who hesitate to donate.
A. One man cannot be successful only by his own effort. It is made possible when countless small aids are gathered. I hope that alumni who are successful in society will provide the support to create such aid.
Q. What would you wish from UNIST?
A. I know that there are not many institutes in the City of Ulsan where students can receive higher education. I hope that UNIST will play the role of an excellent educational institute in the area for students like me who have the desire for learning.
