Seniors tell stories of wise student life at UNIST
In an exciting college life, nothing is better than to hear the experiences of our seniors to know about the college life where mixed emotions of thrill and worry are the norm. I asked Lim Ki-Beom, the Ambassador of Students, about the details of college life such as classes, environment, and the special characteristics of UNIST that new students dreamed of while entering UNIST, and if they can take classes normally due to COVID-19.

Q. Would you please introduce yourself?
-
A. Hello, my name is Lim Ki-Beom and my major is Computer Science and Engineering. I’ve been working as an Ambassador of Students. When I was in high school, I participated in the program Explorer@UNIST run by the UNIST. At that time, seniors at UNIST who were the Ambassadors of Students looked so nice in their uniforms. I had a vague idea right then: ‘I will be an Ambassador of Students after I enter the college.’ I applied to UNIST as I believed that the two years’ activity as the Ambassador of Students would be really meaningful to bring honor to the UNIST as an undergraduate student. Now, I am doing my best to fulfill the responsibilities of an Ambassador of Students with the heart of caring for and loving our school much more than anyone has.

Q. Due to COVID-19, classes may not proceed smoothly. How is the situation?
-
A. UNIST has followed the principle of untact classes and proceeded with online classes by using a system called ‘blackboard’ and the video chatting program ZOOM for all coursework including homework and tests. Most subjects mainly show class materials with the function of sharing screen and proceed with an explanation by the relevant professor. According to the features of the subject and the type of lecturing, opinions are shared through Google Documents or the system of a small conference room and/or the activities conducted by each team. Also, each professor provides a detailed explanation about the questions students raise in the middle of a class. Besides the classes, we have been able to resolve the problem of poor communication between the professors and students, which was the ongoing issue of untact classes while using recitation time and Email to resolve the questions. It is a principle to follow the untact classes, but contact classes are allowed for some small-scale experiments and practice lectures.

Q. How about professors?
-
A. Professors of UNIST are especially young compared to other colleges. This is a great advantage for undergraduate students of UNIST. As professors are young, they are not only sensitive to the research trends but they also understand the positions of undergraduate students very well. For instance, before students enroll in classes, they have a period of consultation for preliminary enrollment with advising professors. UNIST operates the system of no major in the freshmen year and students are free to choose and change their major, so that they can use this period and request consultation with professors regarding their careers.

Q. Is it necessary to prepare for the English classes? What is the level of difficulty?
-
A. You may worry about the English class. If you have not studied English in advance, it is better to learn the scientific or mathematical terminologies that will be used in the contents you will learn later. When you listen to the English class, many unknown terminologies will come out due to which you may miss the flow of the class while looking for the words in the middle of the class.
If you know the words ahead, you can focus better on the class. As for the level of difficulty in the English classes, our professors proceed with the classes using easy terminologies, so it won’t be too hard. If you encounter parts that you do not understand in the middle of the class, it is possible to ask questions in Korean when the professor is a native Korean or speaks English. Professors will explain the questions in details so that the English classes will not be so difficult.

Q. How is the dormitory life?
-
A. The dormitory of UNIST consists of an apartment structure with 3 to 4 rooms in each suite. The first dormitory operates a one person studio. The second, third and fourth dormitories operate two person rooms. At present, we are operating the dormitory with one person rooms in order to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Students will use the food service of the dormitory at the restaurants in the school such as the dormitory cafeteria, student cafeteria, faculty and staffs cafeteria, and the cafeteria hall (Building 206). Students buy simple foods from the convenience store or order foods that will be delivered to the dormitory room so they can eat while talking with their friends. Also, nearby the dormitory, there are a sports center, a lounge, an annex hall, convenience stores, and a sports field, and students can use them freely.

Q. Is there anything you are proud of among the facilities in the school?
-
A. UNIST has been providing much support for the research as it is a college specialized in Natural Sciences and Engineering. Especially, UNIST is operating the research support HQ of UCRF. The UCRF is composed of a research facility with materials and equipment for high-notch science and technology and operates a fund of over 70 billion won throughout all centers of UNIST. In addition, researchers including undergraduate students can share the equipment anytime for efficient research. There are very few places with such type of facilities. Among those rare places, UNIST boasts the best facility.

-
Q. What was the biggest reason why you decided to choose UNIST?
-
A. First of all, UNIST offers a lot of supports for facility and students in the higher levels. UNIST supports students generously regarding research and study, which gave me great motivation. Also, it was good to see that undergraduate students had the opportunity to work in the laboratory as interns. Before I entered the graduate school, I thought of the advantage in experiencing the research in advance and learning what methods were used and how it proceeded in the laboratory. And it was advantageous for all freshmen to receive full scholarship in the first semester. I chose UNIST because students could study without tuition payment if they maintain certain grades.

Q. What would you be proud of as the Ambassador of Students at UNIST?
-
A. There are largely three things for which I am proud of UNIST. First, 100% of all classes proceed in English. Every class proceeds based on original text books. Students can improve their English skills. Not only this, many reference materials for self-study are in English. Students learn in English so that they can use such materials effectively. Second, UNIST supports various startup assistance programs. UNIST has been operating various programs in relation to startups such as the UNICORN program that helps the continuation of students’ research into the startups and the innovation group for laboratory startups. In addition, UNISPARK, an exclusive space for students’ startups is located in UNIST. Lastly, there is a lab intern system. Students of UNIST must complete 3 credits of lab internship for their graduation. They can consult with their professors to complete the lab internship during the vacation or within the semester, or they can participate in research activities through the research programs for undergraduate students such as UIRP, AICP, and BTS.

Q. Is there any beneficial or specific aspects to school life in UNIST compared to other colleges?
-
A. I believe the biggest distinction would be that UNIST provides a research basis with the benefit of full scholarship as it is not only a college specialized in the Natural Sciences and Engineering but also an institute of science and technology. UNIST consists of a research platform including various undergraduate research programs of UIRP and BTS and a high-tech research center. UNIST offers a very advantageous environment for students who either have a keen interest in researches or hope to advance to the graduate school as it is possible for undergraduate students to experience actual research fields and participate in researches through internship activities. Moreover, in terms of scholarship benefits, UNIST offers a self-scholarship like overseas training scholarship and a scholarship system in and out of the campus in connection to scholarship foundations, which creates a high quality study environment and relieves the economic burden on students.
